That's not the worst part of Vanner's day. The worst part comes soon after, when he's got Sissy calmed down and tucked in for an early afternoon nap. He's headed out for some ice to wrap in a down and lay by her head, to keep her cool.

That's when the son-of-a-bitch who's about to change Vanner's life steps right in.

He shuts the motel door behind him and bam.

"A moment of your time, if I may," a man Vanner has never seen before says as he catches Vanner by the elbow.

It's bad move to make on his part. No one touches Vanner without his permission. Except maybe Heath. And Marybeth.

They're allowed. Whoever this is, he's not. Vanner's first impulse is to stop, drop the ratty ice bucket he found in the closet of their motel room, and punch whoever the hell this is in the face.

Then he gets a look at the man's mug and decides punching him just for hell of it would improve his mood to no end. This guy has the kind of white salesman grin full of the priciest caps money can buy just calling out for a fist to shatter them loose. Slicked-back curly hair, ridiculously expensive clothes that are Hollywood's idea of cowboy wear, and mean, piggy eyes in the middle of his florid face.

Vanner hasn't said word one to this bastard and he hates him already.

"Hope I'm not catching you at a bad time. My name's Sidney." Sidney doesn't let go of Vanner's arm. He thrusts out his free hand, the wrong one, offering a shake. When Vanner makes no move to respond, Sidney grins like that tickles him pink. "I'd heard you were a tough guy, Gitane. I'm happy to see that you live up to expectations."

Vanner says nothing. He studies those ugly little eyes, picking up on every sideways flicker and glimpse of cruel humor. Sidney's laughing at him for sure.

He doesn't know why, though, so he keeps his mouth shut.

People purely hate it when a man won't speak when he's spoken to. They start jabbering all sorts of shit just to fill in the silence.

Sidney's easy. Barely thirty seconds of dead air and he's working his mouth like a mockingbird. "You are, in fact, absolutely everything I expected. A hard bastard who should 27

have been in prison a long time ago, walking the yards and selling your ass for cigarettes."

Now hold on there. Silence is well and good in its place, and this isn't it. "You want to take your hands off me,"

Vanner says, making it a statement and not a question. If Sidney doesn't get the fuck off, Vanner's going to force the issue and Sidney won't like that. He glares as he speaks to better get his point across.

"No, I don't." Sidney's grip tightens to the point of pain and beyond, grinning bright and broad when Vanner flinches despite his best intentions. He's enjoying this.
